In light of the article published by The Telegraph, dated 30 January 2015: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11378898/Former-Royal-Navy-chef-jailed-over-1m-fake-sea-bass-scam.html ; Michael Redhead, a former Royal Navy chef, from Newton Arlosh, Cumbria, was jailed after conning frozen food giant Iceland into selling the wrong kind of fish to customers. A judge had branded the £1.1 million fraud a 'scandal' and said public confidence at a time of heightened concern about the origin and identification of food was 'seriously undermined'. Hull Crown Court heard that the case involved the sale of hundreds of thousands of packs of fish labeled as "sea bass" through Iceland foods ltd stores, which was actually Japanese sea bass. Michael Redhead, 49-year-old, replaced sea bass with a cheaper oriental perch, after which he forged an email confirming it was the same fish. Almost, 400,000 packs of the wrongly labelled fish that was worth more than £1.1 million were sold at 600 Iceland outlets across the country between the years 2012 and 2014. Speaking after the hearing, Chris Wilson, city trading standards manager at Hull city Council said: "The trading standards investigation showed Mr. Redhead had intentionally provided false advice to a manufacturer and a retailer about how the product could be labelled." The fraud was uncovered when trading standards officer from Hull city Council visited an Iceland store in the east of the city. Redhead's company, which had made profits of around £58,000 in the last financial year, received £19686.60 as a result of fraud and the firm was fined £50,000.
